Wait on God. Trust in God. These are two of the most common things we hear as Christians, and to be honest, they can start to sound a little stale...even though we know they're two of the most powerful keys to effective and joyful living.
But fortunately, when we grow weary with truths that have become familiar, all we need to do is ask God for a fresh perspective, and He is gracious to teach us! He never fails to amaze me with the insights He shares when I ask Him how, where, or in what way I am to apply something.
Lately, my problem has been trusting God with anticipation and balancing that with rest--even when I lack understanding about something. It's become hard for me to get a clear picture of what it looks like to allow the Truth of God's sovereignty and faithfulness to settle into my heart and affect the way I live. But today, when I asked Him about that, He brought back to my mind the many childhood road trips that fill my memory.
We all know that kids love to ask questions on the way to the campground, the fair, or Grandma's house. But eventually, the are we there yet? settles down as the child surrenders to the gentle hum of the car's motor and the rush of the interstate. Kids often nap in the car, not even bothering to worry about how the vehicle is operating or what the route looks like or what's happening on the road. They instinctively know that the driver has all that under control.
Then, when they wake up, they're often excited about the destination, exclaiming over scenery out the window, enjoying special road-trip activities in the car, and making the most of the stops along the journey. When they need refreshment or rest, nourishment or questions answered, the driver is there to provide it. But they generally have a good time because they instinctively surrender their lack of understanding and capability to the driver who has both.
I hope this encourages you today and provides you with a fresh picture of the kind of faith we are equipped to have in Christ as we travel this path with Him. There are plenty of unknowns along the way. We might break down, get rained on, or run into roadblocks. But none of that needs to derail us completely. The Driver has us on a good path, heading for a good destination. We can look ahead with anticipation and rest when we are weary because He has everything under control...even things we can't comprehend. Even when He might give us the wheel for a moment, He never leaves us alone and defenseless.
Hold fast to that promise today; whatever you're waiting for, wait on God. His strength is our enablement to reach the finish line. And it will be so worth it.
